Net Zero Innovation Manager, National Grid Electricity Transmission

Gary joined National Grid in 2023 as Net Zero Innovation Manager. Gary graduated from the University of Warwick with a BSc in Biology and then started his career on the graduate leadership programme at Severn Trent Water.

Gary spent 10 years working in the water industry in various roles where he has led front line operational teams, teams of scientists and experts delivering the Water Industry National Environment Programme and led a multi-million pound innovation portfolio. Gary's experience therefore lies within the water and energy sectors, both leading teams across a range of disciplines and coordinating international and UK projects and programmes in the fields of water resources, R&D and innovation related to sustainability, environment, circular economy and energy.

In his current role as Net Zero Innovation Manager Gary leads a team of innovation experts and the Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) innovation portfolio. This portfolio is focused on facilitating the energy system transition to net zero for all. Gary's team cover innovation in a wide range of areas such as: substations, overhead lines, underground cables, protection and control, whole systems, net zero construction materials and resilience. The team works across the innovation spectrum on research, development and demonstration projects.
