Social scientist leads partnership towards net zero

Durham University Stand: H10
Social scientist leads partnership towards net zero

The post is part-funded by leading renewable energy developer Ørsted. It is part of a renewed partnership with the DEI to help deliver net zero emissions by 2050.

Visionary leadership

DEI and Ørsted have worked in partnership for over 15 years.

Previous research from this partnership has focussed more on the technical aspects of offshore wind. Professor Abram brings a greater focus on the wider aspects of current and future energy systems.

This includes exploring different visions that people hold about energy futures, and looking at how energy is governed and managed.

Under Professor Abram’s leadership the DEI aims to promote research that leads to inclusive and fair energy systems, and that improves the lives of all energy users while caring for the planet.

"The DEI is a home for integrated, innovative and visionary work in the field of energy transition. Our partnership with Ørsted provides the opportunity for exciting and pioneering research tied to valuable industry insight. Working together, we can have greater influence towards a clean and just energy transition."

Professor Simone Abram, Director of Durham Energy Institute

Nurturing future energy experts

The renewed partnership will see Ørsted continue to fund MSc scholarships and PhDs, helping DEI nurture the next generation of energy researchers and technicians.

DEI and Ørsted both see innovation having an important role in the energy transition. Their partnership encourages  a holistic approach to sustainability – incorporating environmental, economic and social considerations.

Their collaboration will continue to position both organisations at the forefront of energy transition research and innovation.
