Qwello UK completes installation of EV charging stations across City of London’s Square Mile

Pan European Charge Point operator Qwello UK has announced this week the installation of 49 smart charging points has been completed at five locations across the City of London.

Following a competitive tender process, Qwello UK secured the contract with The City of London Corporation to undertake a complete upgrade of the Square Mile’s electric vehicle charging points.

Commencing work in early August across five sites including Minories Car Park at 1 Shorter St, Baynard House Car Park on Queen Victoria St, 23 London Wall Car Park, Tower Hill Car Park at 50 Lower Thames St, and Smithfield Car Park, installation took just eight weeks to complete with all 49 charging stations now operational.

The newly installed charge points deliver a more reliable, convenient and accessible charging experience for all electric vehicle users, through user-friendly functions including contactless payment, a reservation service via the Qwello app, and 24-7 customer support.

Each charging station also features an integrated retractable cable with an 11kW 3 Phase Type 2 plug that reduces trip hazards, can be operated with one hand, and is compatible with all European and US EV-connection standards.

The upgrade is part of the City Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy goal to become a net zero organisation by 2040, through the encouragement and facilitation of electric vehicle use, powered by 100% renewable electricity.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transport Committee, Shravan Joshi, said:

“I’m delighted to see that the Square Mile’s electric vehicle charging points have been upgraded so swiftly and without issue. Much of central London and the Square Mile has experienced higher levels of air pollution than the rest of the UK, but through initiatives like these, we have been able to reduce the City’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions by more than 55%, since 2008.

“The City’s Climate Action and Air Quality strategies are already bearing fruit, delivering a clean and safe environment for the Square Mile’s residents, workers and visitors.”

Martin Hale, Managing Director of Qwello UK, said:

It’s been great to have been given the opportunity to work with the City of London Corporation and deliver and complete on the planned charging infrastructure upgrade in just fourteen weeks.

We’re confident that residents, businesses and visitors to the Square Mile will find our driver-friendly higher power and feature-rich stations easy to use and a big improvement on the previous charge stations available.”
