Pioneering on-site geothermal electricity generation
Helle Ehrenreich is CEO of Micro Thermal Energy Ltd, a London-based company that has developed a groundbreaking solution to renewable energy, using geothermal heat to generate electricity. With roots in Denmark and over 25 years in the energy industry, Helle’s unique journey from engineering to law across multiple countries has shaped her approach to energy innovation. The transition to renewable energy faces significant challenges, particularly in rural areas where grid infrastructure is limited. Micro Thermal Energy’s pioneering Thermawynd® solution generates clean electricity using geothermal heat, delivering continuous power 24/7 without relying on weather conditions or extensive infrastructure. The technology’s small footprint and minimal visual impact make it particularly valuable for accelerating decarbonisation in rural communities. “It takes ability, motivation, and courage to deliver a ubiquitous renewable energy solution,” says Helle. Her achievements include being selected as a finalist in the Founders Forward Perfect Pitch programme 2024 sponsored by JPMorgan Chase. The company’s innovative approach to renewable energy positions it to play a crucial role in reducing pressure on the National Grid while improving EV charging infrastructure beyond urban areas. “The Women in Innovation Award is a crucial milestone in evolving Micro Thermal Energy’s technology,” says Helle. “The recognition offered by the panel of assessors, and their feedback serves as an essential endorsement that will attract the attention of investors who are eagerly awaiting a proof of concept.” Through the programme, she aims to complete 3D modelling of the technology, a critical step towards prototype development. “The biggest barrier is fear of the unknown and the challenge is to not let it paralyse you,” Helle reflects. “Tenacity is the key to overcoming this.” Her advice to aspiring women innovators? “There’s always something to learn, so welcome new learning. You’ll need help along the way, so select good advisors. And if you spot an opportunity, take it.”
